At the Monday, February 15, 2010 endorsement meeting of the full Dauphin County Republican Committee, Chairman John McNally announced that all GOP candidates for the United States Congress from Pennsylvania's 17th District had requested an open primary. This represents a surprising, very significant course change for Dave Argall who entered the race actively seeking Party endorsement.
Since electing to run as a Republican for that office, Frank Ryan has been meeting with district GOP committees out of respect for the members, but has been consistently clear about his preference for an open primary to allow Republican voters in the district to select the nominee. Col. Ryan (Ret) has argued against pre-endorsed candidates and structured party back door deals, going so far as to decline offers of endorsement from certain committees with which he has met.
We expect that David Argall will now exhibit the same principled consistency Frank Ryan has done throughout the process and ask the Schuylkill, Lebanon, Berks, and Perry County committees to declare their primaries open also.
Allowing the people to decide is not a novel concept. It was embedded in the thinking of the Founders. It is a sad commentary on American politics today that so many in elected offices and in their party hierarchies do not embrace so simple and honorable a principle.
Despite the awkward path that brought Dave Argall to an open primary in Dauphin County, Frank Ryan welcomes him into the 2010 political mainstream.
The energized base of the Republican Party will not accept brokered candidates. Not this year.
