Dauphin County Government Most Overstaffed in State
Haste, DiFrancesco bloat payroll
by News Article
Dauphin County's annual budget skyrocketed by 25% this year -- and overstaffing is one of the key reasons.
According to the Wilkes-Barre Times-Leader Dauphin County has the most county employees per 1,000 population of any Third Class county in the state.
Dauphin County has 1,481 full-time employees servicing a population of 256,562 residents. That equates to 5.77 employees per 1,000 population. By contrast, neighboring Lancaster County has just 3.31 employees per 1,000 population and York County has 4.23 employees per 1,000 population.
This is yet another indication of how spend-thrift GOP commissioners Jeff Haste and Nick DiFrancesco favor the spending habits of Nancy Pelosi and Ed Rendell more than Republican fiscal conservatism.
We'll see what happens to taxes next year now that the fake surplus they ginned up years ago will be eaten up by this year's profiligate spending. The county can not continue spending at this pace without substantial additional tax revenue. And, after eight years in office, they won't be able to blame this fical meltdown on the "previous administration."
