Specter Votes for Job-Killing Legislation Today

Allentown, PA "" Today, Senator Arlen Specter demonstrated his insistence on kowtowing to the far left-wing of the Democratic Party when he voted for the job-killing cap-and-trade legislation this morning in the Environment and Public Works Committee.

According to a study released by the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM), a similar cap-and-trade bill would cost Pennsylvania over 70,000 jobs, and would dramatically increase the price of gasoline, natural gas, and oil. Even President Obama admitted that the legislation would hurt Americans, saying, "Under my plan . . . electricity rates would necessarily sky-rocket."

The legislation is so harmful to the country's economy, Democratic Senator Max Baucus voted against it this morning. And last spring, 44 Democrats, including 4 Pennsylvania Democrats, voted against a similar version in the House of Representatives. Senator Specter, on the other hand, decided his political career was more important than protecting Pennsylvania jobs.

"It is important that we support commonsense policies to protect our environment, but we must make sure that we protect Pennsylvania jobs first and foremost," U.S. Senate candidate Pat Toomey said. "With the unemployment rate climbing towards 10%, passing cap-and-trade is the worst thing we can do right now, and many Democrats in Congress have come to the same conclusion. It is unfortunate that Arlen Specter decided to put his desire to impress the radical left-wing ahead of his own constituents. Pennsylvanians deserve better than that."
